Barbecue safety – Avoid barbecue lighter fluids! August 10th 09

The barbecue is a privileged moment often with the family, it’s warm and nice outside, we’re together, we often have friends, and we’ll all eat and drink!

But do NOT take more RISK than needed!

The French consumer security commission (CSC) has published a recommendation where they prefer solid barbecue lighter consumables before lighter fluids. The lighter fluids are cause for many burn accidents every year and also intoxications. They are also reserved regarding the cubes soaked in different petro chemical products, as kids take it for sweets and eat them. The result is intoxication.

Personally, I recommend the Rapid’BBQ as you avoid all the inherent problems with lighter fluids or cubes of very different origin. The Rapid’BBQ is also ecological!

What the CSC recommends :

  • You should use solid lighter consumables, to the expense of lighter fluids, for lighting fireplaces, barbecues, etc.
  • Do not let any (petro) chemical lighter products within reach for kids. When not used, they should be put away in a safe place.
  • Avoid buying solid lighter cubes in scored plates.
  • Respect the safety instructions to the smallest detail when using these products:
  • Do not use this type of products if you do not have sufficient access to fresh air.
  • Do not inhale smoke or stay to close when using the lighter consumables like fluids or cubes.
  • For barbecues, wait until the lighter product is TOTALLY consumed (no more flames) before grilling your food.
  • Do never try to get the barbecue going again with lighter consumables like liquids or cubes when the first attempt to light it did not succeed.
Do not hesitate to come and discuss with us in the barbecue discussion board!
I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

On the Rapid'BBQ site you'll find:

Articles about different aspects of the Barbecue (types of barbecues, preparation, lighting of the barbecue, recipes, cooking and maintenance). Of course, we also propose a bbq discussion board, where we together can discuss all this.
Our French friend Alain, a passionate for Barbecue, will write us regular editorials and Susanna the Chef will be orchestering the recipes and will also write us about her thoughts. You can also discuss with them on the discussion board.

Let’s prepare the upcoming season by a first maintenance of the Charcoal Barbecue and equipment.
