Rusty barbecue (bbq) and grilled salmon steaks! Juin 1st 2009 |
Finally the nice weather confirms the barbecue season is here to stay!
We have noticed a lot of our visitors and clients have been looking for advice on rusty barbecue (bbq) grills. The barbecue has often been left at the end of last season without thorough cleaning and good storage.
A friend of mine called for help, and I used the occasion to make some pictures on the barbecue & rust subject!
So, this is where we found the barbecue, put away in a very nonchalant manner in a barn. My friend claims it's his brother who is responsible for this as he did the last barbecue before the winter came...
First of all, we have to de-rust the barbecue grill that is in direct contact with the meat and other things we wish to barbecue! As you can see on the picture the grill is really rusty! Normally, I prefer to use my steel brush on this, but I did not bring it for my weekend trip to the countryside! So, we have to use what we have at hand to get the rust of the barbecue!
I used this spatula, to get the biggest rust parts off the grill. Thereafter, I used steel wool to get of the finer rust. The grill does not have to get as new, when you see the remaining stainless steel shining, you're close to finished.
While we're at it, I'd like to share the menu of the day with you!
Marinated salmon steaks with bulgur and yogurt sauce! This is simply delicious on a hot summer day!
We cooked the salmon unilateral; this means we only cooked it on the side with the skin (the skin gets totally carbonised). Only at the end did we cook slightly the other sides.
Here you have the result! We served a chilled French Bandol wine with it!
Bon appétit!
Oh yes, a small tip regarding fish on the barbecue, you have surely noticed that it easily get stuck on the barbecue grill.
To turn or take off the fish (steak or other) from the barbecue grill, the gripper is very useful (and compulsory for a successful barbecue session!). Slide each part of the gripper on each side of the first bar. Lift carefully and hold the fish up with the spatula. Continue like this until the whole piece is free. Of course if your fish has no skin, you have to be very carefully when removing it from the barbecue. I'll soon be back with new articles, meanwhile do not hesitate to come discussing with us in the discussion forum.
